The Small Operator Vision Group (SOVG) has released its latest Vision Report, “Can AI Help Small Operators? How FavTrip Creates AI Solutions One Problem at a Time,” examining how one operator built practical AI tools to catch billing errors, streamline invoice reconciliation, spot trending products, and improve hiring, while offering a clear roadmap for other operators to start small, stay disciplined, and free up time for growth.
The SOVG virtual meeting, held on September 3, 2026, was facilitated by Roy Strasburger, CEO of StrasGlobal, president of Compliance Safe, and Vision Group Network co-founder, and featured a presentation by Babir Sultan, founder of FavTrip and Eagle Eye Live. Following the presentation, SOVG members and guests joined a wide-ranging, practical discussion on AI use for small operators.
Key takeaways in the report include:
- How AI Caught a Costly Invoice Mistake: FavTrip’s AI system flagged a $25,381.40 fuel invoice billed to the wrong store and contacted the supplier the same day, correcting the charge before it became a write-off. “Any time we save time, energy, and money to do something, we always have a list of things that we could be investing our time, energy, and money into, as well,” said Babir Sultan, founder of FavTrip and Eagle Eye Live.
- Building an AI Workflow the Right Way: Operators getting started should commit to a single platform, begin with narrow and specific tasks, verify results by hand, and expand gradually rather than chasing every new release. Sultan advised operators to “always start with the problem and then seek out the tool.”
- AI Adoption Journeys: Members described progress ranging from building exception reports through open point-of-sale APIs to testing internal agents for operations and HR questions, though legacy POS systems continue to limit access to data. “It doesn’t cost that much to go do this and as much as your brain can think about how you want to see something and how it will remove complexity of the operations for your team. That’s the dream,” said Steve McKinley, CEO and founder of Urban Value Corner Store.
- The Future of Invoice Handling: While digital vendor feeds are easily automated, paper invoices from smaller local suppliers remain a hurdle, and some back-office providers are now training AI to read handwritten invoices directly. “We’re using Claude and we’re starting to use it quite a bit. I got to a point where I was sort of sitting on the sidelines just watching it all fly by me and everybody else using it and I wasn’t…It’s not quite as daunting as you might think, and we’re using it a lot more…This is evolving so quickly and we’re trying not to get distracted and stay on task,” said Michael Lipton, CEO of Lipton Inc.
- Building Staff Buy-In and Culture: Employees embrace AI tools more readily when they are asked what tasks they want removed from their plate and are included in the process rather than told a system is being adopted. “It’s so much of the culture and it really doesn’t matter if it’s tech or anything, it’s all change. How does your culture address change, buy-in, and empowerment of your people that they get included in the decision-making process and often can give great input, because they’re closer to where the solution’s getting deployed,” said Chris Bambury, president of Bambury, Inc.
